Issue #27: Who's Really Pulling the Strings? The Puppet Masters of AI

As AI evolves at breakneck speed, the rulebook is still being written. Andrew Ng, Co-founder at Coursera, points out that ‘’AI is the new electricity.’’ and can potentially impact every industry. But how ethical is AI, really?

This week, we delve into AI’s dark side and explore its use and misuse in propaganda and warfare.

Let’s get into it! 👇

In times of war, the first casualty is truth.

- Hiram W. Johnson

Social media algorithms are more than just code-they're puppet masters. They pull the strings of public opinion, especially in volatile situations like the Israel-Palestine conflict. Tristan Harris, a tech ethicist, warns, "We have a digital pacifier for ourselves when we're uncomfortable or lonely."

What makes things bad is when AI converges with attention-grabbing social media algorithms to weaponize propaganda. AI hallucinates data, spreads misinformation, and even exhibits overconfidence. This isn't just a bug; it's a malicious feature. In sensitive conflicts, these AI errors aren't just mistakes; they're catastrophes waiting to happen.

Take the case of Google and Microsoft chatbots falsely claiming ceasefire in Israel. Such factual errors can lead to confusion among individuals in war-impacted regions. To prevent chaos, we need government regulations. They’re lagging, and that's more than a problem. It’s a crisis.

The absence of governance isn't just a loophole; it's a gaping void that allows for the unethical use of AI, especially in the spread of wartime propaganda. According to UNESCO, ‘’AI is not neutral. AI-based decisions are susceptible to inaccuracies, discriminatory outcomes, embedded or inherited bias.’’

Why is the government silent? Leaders are silent because they want to see how the public reacts to AI. This silence during conflicts is a tacit endorsement of the status quo, including the misuse of AI for propaganda.

We need leaders of these companies to step up. All they have done is signed petitions calling for a pause in AI advancements, yet they're the ones pushing the envelope. This isn't just hypocrisy; it's a betrayal of public trust.

How to Be a Glitch (Don’t Let AI Carry You Away!)

💡 Be Aware of Emotional Manipulation: Understand that the content you read may be designed to manipulate your emotions. Be discerning, especially in high-stakes situations like the Israel-Palestine conflict.

💡 Don't Wait for Regulations: Be proactive about the information you consume and share. Government regulations are lagging. Think twice about what’s authentic and what’s not.

💡 Question The Silence: Be skeptical of industry leaders who talk about ethics but continue to push the boundaries of responsible AI use.

💡 Cross-Check Information: Always double-check the information you come across, especially in volatile situations. AI can be as misinformed as the random guy yelling on Twitter.

Remember- a robot can’t dictate humanity, only help it.

Let’s aim for a world where AI recognizes bias or discrimination. AI should bring humanity together, not be a catalyst for spreading hatred.
