Which Pill Will You Take?
Dive into the biggest debate in AI
Are you ready to make a choice in AI's future?
Welcome to this edition of 'The GLITCH', where we're tackling a hot debate straight from Silicon Valley: Should we speed up AI's growth or hit the brakes for ethics? It's a battle of ideas โ the rapid push of Effective Accelerationism against the careful path of Effective Altruism. Your decision isn't just about AI; it's about shaping our shared tomorrow. We're highlighting both sides โ the fast-forward approach and the cautious one.
In this issue, we also cast a spotlight on Jyre Lawas, a visionary Filipino artist who is redefining the intersection of technology and creativity. Laws' work is a mesmerizing blend of AI innovation and the vibrant spontaneity of street art.
We wrap up with top AI tools and resources, curated to spark your imagination.
Choose wisely. Red or blue โ which path do you carve for AI?
๐ BLUE PILL: EFFECTIVE ALTRUISM
Effective Altruism (EA) is all about making the biggest positive impact using rational, evidence-backed methods. It's a mindset that's catching on in AI circles, especially given some eye-opening stats: A survey of over 550 AI experts showed nearly half fear advanced AI could lead to human extinction. This concern is echoed by AI frontrunners like OpenAI, DeepMind, and Anthropic, spotlighting the need for an ethical approach in AI development.
Take Daniela Amodei's leap from OpenAI to co-found Anthropic, where she helped launch Claude 2, an AI model that diverges from OpenAI's methods. Claude 2 uses 'Constitutional AI', guided by firm principles, in contrast to OpenAI's focus on human feedback. This shift underscores a growing trend towards AI safety.
But it's not just about technology. The FTC is on a mission to ensure fair play, yet regulating AI on a global scale is a daunting task. With AI systems like GPT-4 sometimes prioritizing engagement over accuracy, the FTC's job gets even tougher. It begs the question: In a world where AI's reach is boundless, how do we balance profit and principles? This is the heart of the Blue Pill's challenge โ navigating the fine line between AI's potential and its ethical boundaries.
๐ RED PILL: EFFECTIVE ACCELERATIONISM
E/acc prefers the all-gas, no-brakes approach. Its adherents favor open-sourcing A.I. software rather than having it be controlled by big corporations. And unlike Effective Altruists, they donโt see powerful A.I. as something to be feared or guarded against. They believe that AI's benefits far outweigh its harmful influence. Also, the right thing to do with such important technology is to get out of the way and let it rip.
At the heart of E/acc lies a fusion of forward-thinking and entrepreneurial spirit. It draws from the bold ideas of thinkers like Nick Land, who envision a world where technology accelerates at an unprecedented pace, driving economic and societal growth.
Despite its progressive stance, E/acc faces internal shifts toward integrating ethical considerations, aligning more with Effective Altruism's approach. OpenAIโs CEO, Emmett Shear, introduces a more cautious approach. Shear, an AI "doomer" and "safetyist," diverges from E/acc's ideology, advocating for slowing down AI development for safety.
๐ BLACK PILL: NIHILISM
In 2024, the 'black pill' perspective also emerges. This perspective embodies a deeply nihilistic view of technological advancements, particularly in the realm of creativity.
This viewpoint diverges sharply from the more optimistic or pragmatic stances of the red pill and the blue pill. It harbors profound skepticism about the impact of technologies like AI on human creativity, questioning whether the relentless push for automated art and efficiency might strip away the unique imperfections and essence of human-made art.
The black pill narrative is critical of the way AI and social media technologies work. Such as TikTok and Snapchat filters, commodify and dilute human expression. It argues that the modern drive for optimized, quick creative outputs overlook the intrinsic value of the creative process, which lies in the effort, mastery, and the embrace of inefficiency.
Overall, this perspective warns against a future where technological progress leads to a homogenized, less authentic human experience, reflecting a deeper cynicism about humanity's trajectory and the potential loss of meaningful human experiences in the pursuit of technological advancement.
๐ WHITE PILL: CONSCIOUS OPTIMISM
The 'white pill' perspective offers a contrasting stance amidst the technological discourse.
It symbolizes a hopeful and adaptable approach to the rapidly evolving digital era, embracing individual values and beliefs as anchors in a world dominated by technological change.
The white pill perspective is not about rejecting technology, but about integrating it in a way that enhances human experience and respects individuality.
Under the white pill perspective, technology is viewed as a tool for automating certain tasks and processes, thereby freeing individuals to explore and engage with different aspects of the creative journey. It sees technology not necessarily as an enemy, something to be afraid of, but as a tool in our control to use consciously and to leverage, as a balanced path emphasizing the importance of staying grounded in our core human values, amidst the digital transformation.
STAY CALM
Despite rapid technological shifts highlighted by E/acc, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, reminds us at Davos 2024 that the essence of human experience remains constant. "Humans know what other humans want... we're still very focused on each other," Altman asserts, underscoring that our core human connections endure amidst technological advancements.
MAKE YOUR OWN STANDARDS
With technology evolving faster than government regulation, it's essential to use your influence as a consumer. Support companies that align with your ethical standards and proactively understand AI's risks and rewards. Your choices and voice are powerful tools in shaping the AI landscape.
BE AUTHENTIC
As AI reshapes creativity, remember the unique value of human expression cannot be replicated. Cherish and uphold the authenticity and imperfection in human artistry, standing as a crucial counterpoint to technological uniformity.
STAY GROUNDED
Embrace your roots and principles in the digital era. Invest in the qualities that make you uniquely human and maintain your individuality amidst technological change. Your human traits and values are your strengths in a tech-driven world.
In our newsletter, we like to feature artists and brands that inspire us - and, hopefully, you too - for different reasons, could be their unique creative process and approach to art and creativity, their own history or communication style.
