🤫 AI's Dirty Little Secret? Underpaid Humans on the Backend

Here's the dirty truth about most AI startups "cutting-edge" AI: they’re not using models on the backend; it's underpaid humans doing the work.

They promote themselves as leaders in AI, boasting advanced algorithms.

But in reality, there are thousands of low-paid workers in places like the Philippines logging on every day to do the tedious grunt work. We're talking dingy internet cafes where young people label data and annotate images so Scale's AI models can function.

That might not be illegal, but it's definitely unethical.

And Scale AI isn't the only company in this boat. I’ve spoken with numerous AI founders who lean heavily on low-cost human labor, especially in the early stages, to help train models when the AI isn’t refined yet.

Just because it's an industry norm doesn't make it okay.

Exploiting these workers to advance AI while paying them peanuts is wrong. These workers, often in digital sweatshops, provide the foundation on which these AI systems are built. Not to mention the lack of transparency about their vital role. 🤷

There are ethical ways forward, but Scale is taking the low road.

They've kept their secret far too long without acknowledging how much their AI still depends on humans and often it fails than it should.

🥤Coca-Cola's Flavor from the Future?

Coca-Cola just introduced a limited-edition drink, Coca‑Cola® Y3000 Zero Sugar, co-created with AI to envision the future.

Key Details:

  • The flavor was developed using human insights and AI, capturing fans' perceptions of the future.

  • Available in select markets, including the US, Canada, China, Europe, and Africa.

  • Even the futuristic design was co-created with AI, and consumers can use a QR code to scan the can for an AI-powered experience.

Takeaway: This is a clever marketing gimmick from Coca-Cola, capitalizing on the AI hype. Will definitely give it a try, but I hope it won't turn me into a robot though lol.

🦉 1 Insight from Ash

You know, every time I hear about these "innovative" AI breakthroughs, I can't help but roll my eyes a bit. Why? Because beneath the shiny veneer of many tech advancements, there's often a story we're not being told.

It's a reminder that in our rush to embrace the future, we sometimes overlook the very real, human costs that come with it. And while I'm all for progress, I believe it's high time we start valuing transparency and ethics just as much as we value novelty.

Let's not get so caught up in the AI hype that we forget the real values that should drive our progress.

Remember, while technology can dazzle and amaze, it's the human stories, the ethics, and the genuine intent behind them that truly matter.
