A recent study has shown that artificial intelligence (AI) can identify which keys are being pressed on a laptop keyboard with more than 90% accuracy, just based on sound recordings and can be use to crack simple passwords instantly if leak.

• Researchers conducted a proof-of-concept study using machine learning to identify keystrokes from keyboard sounds.

• They recorded the sound of pressing each of the 36 keys on a MacBook Pro 25 times using different fingers and pressure.

• The sounds were recorded over Zoom calls and on a smartphone near the keyboard and some of the data were used to train a machine learning model to recognize the acoustic features of each keypress.

• The model was then tested on the remaining data and could correctly identify the key 95% of the time from phone recordings and 93% of the time from Zoom recordings.
